Yield

Also called yield measure.

Income from an asset divided by its price, expressed as an annual percentage. The word needs a qualifier, because each market measures the income differently.

For a bond, the current yield is the coupon divided by the price, so a bond paying ₹70 a year and priced at ₹950 has a current yield of 7.37%, while its yield to maturity also counts the ₹50 gain to face value at redemption. For a share, the dividend yield divides the dividend by the price and the earnings yield divides the earnings. For a property, rent less operating costs over value is the capitalisation rate. Airlines use the word for something else entirely: revenue per passenger kilometre.

Because price is in the denominator, a yield rises when the price falls, and a high yield is as often a warning about the price as an offer of income.

Name the yield before you compare two of them.
