Benchmarking

M2.05

Also called peer benchmarking, comparative analysis.

Comparing a company's ratios against a chosen peer set, over several years, on a consistent basis.

The discipline that makes it work is consistency. Every ratio has to be computed the same way for every company, from the filings rather than from a data provider, because providers differ on definitions, on standalone versus consolidated, and on how they treat exceptional items.

The output that matters is not the level but the pattern: which company is best on each measure, whether the ranking is stable, and what the leader does differently.

Five to eight peers, five years, computed by hand once.
