Management discussion and analysis

The narrative section in which management explains the year's performance, the industry conditions, the risks, and the internal control environment.

Its value is uneven and its structure is prescribed, which helps. Segment-wise performance, the risk section and the discussion of financial performance against operational performance are the parts that carry information; the industry overview is usually recycled.

The technique that gets value out of it is comparison across years. Language that appears three years running and then changes has changed for a reason, and risks that quietly disappear from the list were either solved or reclassified.
