Learning objectives
By the end of the week you can:
- Argue why communication is a first-class analytical skill: explain, with the decision as the unit of value, why the best analysis is worthless if it does not change a decision, and why explaining a business simply (the Feynman test) is the truest proof of understanding, not a soft add-on.
- Apply Barbara Minto's Pyramid Principle properly: lead with the single governing thought (the answer), support it with a MECE grouping of arguments, detail beneath each, and enforce the vertical Q&A and horizontal (inductive/deductive) logic that makes a document a pyramid rather than a pile.
- Enforce the "so what?" discipline: convert observation into insight on every line, kill throat-clearing and burying-the-lede, and cut any sentence that does not earn its place, so a busy reader gets the conclusion first and the evidence on demand.
- Frame any document with SCQA: write an introduction (Situation → Complication → Question → Answer) that walks the reader to your question and lands your governing thought, instead of opening with a data dump.
- Produce the two core written artifacts: the one-page investment memo (the M8.04 six-part thesis re-taught as a communication object) and the longer research report (an inverted-pyramid structure whose executive summary stands alone and lets a reader stop at any depth). Then rewrite a rambling draft into a crisp one.
- Design clean exhibits and present a model others trust: build charts and tables that carry one message with the "so what" in the title, direct labels, and no chartjunk; and present a model transparently (an assumptions page, sensitivity shown not hidden, a walkthrough that starts from the output) so a stranger can audit it and believe it.
- Build an executive slide deck on the action-title convention: every slide title a full-sentence claim, one idea per slide, the title stack passing the flip test, so the deck is the pyramid laid horizontally; and adapt the same conclusion for different audiences (the PM, the investment committee, the consulting client) without changing the truth.
Prerequisites & connections
Builds on. Everything with a written deliverable, which is everything. Most directly: M8.04, where the six-part one-page thesis (business · why it's a good business · variant perception · the three things that must go right · valuation & expected return · sell criteria) is re-opened here not as analysis but as a communication artifact, and its Titan model answer is the exemplar dissected here. M3.05 / M3.08–M3.09 and the valuation workflow: the DCF, the sensitivity table, the reverse DCF, and the inputs/calcs/outputs discipline are the raw material of §4.8 (presenting a model so others trust it). M6.03, where inversion and second-order thinking underlie the "so what?" move from fact to implication. The Feynman "teach it back" prompt that has closed every module is now the explicit thesis of the whole module. M0.04's knowledge system: the company file and decision journal are where these finished artifacts live.
Feeds forward. M10.04 (lifelong practice + final audit): your public track record (published memos, a paper-portfolio journal, teach-backs) is this method run in public forever, and the final C11 audit grades the portfolio you assemble here. Phase 9's process (M9.04): the memo is the decision-journal entry; the exec deck is how you would present a name to an investment committee or a client. In the world beyond the program, this is the module that decides whether your analytical edge ever reaches the person who acts on it.
The competency it certifies. This is the home module of C11 — communicate like a top consultant (structure memos, one-pagers, models, and decks Minto-style: conclusion first, pyramid logic, clean exhibits). C11 was assessed on every capstone against the comms rubric; M10.03 teaches that rubric and certifies it through the portfolio review. It also carries the program's Feynman spine to its conclusion: the ability to explain a business simply is the truest test of understanding. That sentence has been the quiet through-line since M0.01.
