Start with the oldest line in the trade: revenue is vanity, profit is sanity, cash is reality. The three differ mechanically. Accrual accounting books economic events when they happen, and cash moves on its own timetable. A sale on 90-day credit is revenue today and cash next quarter. Depreciation is an expense today for cash spent years ago.
So expect a gap between profit and cash. The system was built to produce one. When there's a scandal, it shows up in the pattern of the gap.
Why do analysts trust the cash flow statement more than the P&L? Net income is the sum of dozens of estimates: revenue recognition timing, provision sizing, depreciation lives, impairment judgments, deferred tax positions. Each one is a small dial management can turn. CFO starts from that estimated number and then reverses every estimate out of it, putting back what actually moved through the bank. Fewer dials. A company can book a fictitious sale with a journal entry. Making fictitious cash arrive takes an accomplice or a crime.
Don't lean on that too hard, though, because the crime happens. Satyam (2009) confessed to ₹5,040 crore of cash and bank balances that didn't exist. Roughly 94% of the reported cash was fake, and it stayed on audited balance sheets for years. Enron dressed bank loans up as operating cash through prepaid commodity swaps, putting billions of CFF in a CFO costume. So the fair ranking is that cash is much harder to fake than profit, though not impossible. Short of fraud, CFO can still be staged. It can be timed or borrowed or reclassified in ways that flatter a year or three. Telling generated cash from staged cash is the first skill you'll learn below, and it's the forensic work's obsession.

Does the cash flow statement work for banks and insurers?
One scope note before the tools. For the financials (banks, NBFCs, insurers), the cash flow statement is close to meaningless as a quality signal. Lending out deposits is the business, so "operating" cash flow swings wildly with loan-book growth and tells you nothing about profitability or risk. Park financials until Phase 5's sector instruments. What follows covers the other ~85% of companies.
